📖Book Club

June 17th @ 6pm

For its next meeting on June 17th, the Wednesday Book and Wine Club is reading Catherine Newman’s book “Sandwich,” a heartfelt exploration of family, growth, and the passage of time.

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.

We hope you can join us to discuss this instant New York Times Bestseller!

📚Lit Happens

June 9th @ 6pm

The novel alternates between the two eras, highlighting parallels between the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and 9/11, both catastrophic events in New York that prompted societal change—labor reforms in the early 20th century and the War on Terror in the 21st century. Through these intertwined stories, Meissner explores themes of loss, guilt, love, and the enduring impact of history on individual lives
Ultimately, "A Fall of Marigolds" is a historical fiction and romance that emphasizes the healing power of empathy and the ways in which personal and historical tragedies can resonate across generations 1.

Lit Happens meets again on June 9 at 6:00 PM.

Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger is a 2013 Edgar Award-winning novel about a 13-year-old boy, Frank Drum, in 1961 Minnesota, who experiences a summer of tragedy, secrets, and loss, forcing him to confront the complexities of life, faith, and the "terrible price of wisdom" as he comes of age.
